There are two trip program options, namely, a 9 DAY PROGRAM OPTION; and a 6 DAY PROGRAM OPTION.

We’ve planned this trip to include mostly mountainous terrains but also including several days of palm fringed coastal plains and traditional rice growing villages.

The route encircles the southern part of the province of South Sulawesi starting in the provincial capital of Makassar climbing eastwards to the cool former Dutch hill station of Malino where we'll spend a day cycling to the Teh Nittoh Tea Plantation and the majestic Find Your Sweetheart Takapala Waterfall.

The route then descends to coastal Sinjai through pine forests, sparsely populated upland vegetable growing valleys, through rustic Buginese villages.

We then climb westwards through rice terraced river valleys eventually descending to the traditional wooden sailing boat industry at Bulukumba and the white sand beaches at Cape Bira.

At Bira we can swim, snorkle, dive, sail to nearby offshore islands and otherwise just relax on the beach.

The next two cycle days will take us along the south coast including the spectacular Thousand Steps Bisappu Waterfall near Bantaeng and the beach at Jeneponto. For the most part the route will be smooth, fully bituminized.

The route will cover a distance of just over 500 km with an average of about 85 km per cycle day.

The trip itinerary caters for experienced riders wishing to be challenged by the mostly mountainous terrain and also beginning cycle tourists seeking to start their cycle touring careers by accomplishing 40 - 50 km per day.

The only really busy spot in South Sulawesi is Makassar. We'll be avoiding traffic there by leaving at the crack of dawn.

Drivers in South Sulawesi are generally much more respectful towards cyclists than their Australian counterparts. Away from Makassar, the drivers are mostly commercial drivers who know the roads and are very tolerant towards international cyclists.

We've included full map of Indonesia and Sulawesi showing the route for download.
