CYCLE TORAJA - INDONESIA
Optional beach trip available
1 – 10 JULY 2011
10 days/9 nights
5 CYCLE DAYS
Rafting & Trekking too
This trip is for adventure cyclists who want to combine their love of cycling with exploring an island of physical
contrasts from beaches to jungle to mountains. Experience and discover a new culture in traditional Indonesian society off
the beaten track in the Torajan mountains on the eastern Indonesian island of Sulawesi (formerly "The Celebes").
Trip organizer and leader, bi-lingual bi-cultural Australian Colin Freestone has been riding in Indonesia since 1990 and
on Sulawesi since 2000 and has led 3 group trips on various parts of the island.
Trip starts and finishes in Makassar, the capital of Indonesia's historic spice trade. The route focuses on the mountains
and valleys of the Toraja heartland with its colourful and distinctive culture.
Along the way there'll be visits to markets, schools and traditional villages. We'll buy vegies from roadside stalls for
cooking further along the road.
Participants will experience Indonesian life and culture as it really is. Food will be Indonesian - Sulawesi style - rice,
noodles, vegetables and fish based. Vegetarians can be catered for. There'll be a variety of accommodation – traditional
guesthouses, mountain resorts and international hotels.
To beat the heat of the day we'll start riding early. The pace will be relaxed with frequent stops for re-grouping,
photos, fruit, village cakes, stretching, yarning with the locals, group camaraderie etc.
There'll be many opportunities for spontaneous stops. After we've reached our daily destination and before dinner
there'll be Yoga and swimming will be available 7/10 days.
Indonesian language instruction will be integrated with the daily cycle routines and by the end of the trip riders
should be able to count to a million, barter in the markets and have basic greetings and courtesies.
A beach relax 'n snorkle option ("the Bira Beach option") will be available as an add on after the cycling has finished.
The cost of this option will be USD 237 per person (minimum 6 people)for 3 day/nights.
